Pinto, M.B., Mansfield , P.M., & Crane, J. Credit Card Usage Among Intellectually Disabled Citizens: An Exploratory Study. Submitted for publication consideration , (2006).

  • Sample: n = 37 Nonrandom purposive sample of Intellectually Disabled Citizens recruited through a local agency that provides supportive living services.
  • Participants were assessed on two criteria: (1) basic credit knowledge and (2)the degree to which credit card companies were solicitating to them.
  • Results provided an interesting relationship; even though most participants indicated that they understood the items in the ‘basic credit knowledge' set, when asked to explain what the item was only a very small percentage actually could.
  • Results also indicated that participants are being solicited to by credit card companies.
  • Overall, the study demonstrates a lack of understanding by the Intellectually Disabled population concerning credit card usage and provided a plethora of future research questions and public policy implications.
